Macao is possibly a forerunner of the Baccara; the name is the "“Monte Carlo of the east"” entliehen, the play originates however from Hungary (see below). In Arthur Schnitzlers novella play in the morning-grey as name of the play Bakkarat is called, it might concern however rather Macao. The following description originates from Meyers encyclopedia from 1908 (in original Orthographie).

Macao, from Hungary coming hazard play with map, similarly the Onze et demi, Vingt un, Trente un. Each Pointeur receives a map, further from the banker may it in addition-buy. As counts 1, Zehnen and fig. 0, the remaining sheets after its eyes. It depends to have fast 9 or nevertheless as close ones as possible at 9 eyes in the hand. Who loses itself "“sold"” (over 9 eyes receives), immediately the sentence. If one has as standard equipment nine, then this "“large impact"” is called and doubles paid; if one has eight, then is this "“small impact"”. If the banker sells himself, then he pays all sentences, has he however a large impact, then he pulls from all the double, only the Pointeur, whatever has about nine, loses simply. With same POINT and map number the bank owner always wins. The idea of the Macao is used also in the cube play."”

Differences between Macao and Baccara:

With Macao a player may buy to go with as many as desired maps; if it exceeds nine points, then it loses immediately. Macao resembles therefore the play '' seventeen and four ''. With the different variants of the Baccara a player may buy however only at the most one map. If a player exceeds nine points, then only the unit place counts with the Baccara, i.e. a player can worsen by purchase, the exceeding of nine points meant however not necessarily the loss of the coup.

With Macao all receive your maps, with the Baccara only or to two.
