A play automat is mechanical or electronic equipment, which is simulated a certain play process and either operated completely by means of the coincidence principle or but with partial or complete control by one or more fellow players.

Apart from the maintenance value a commercial interest is often connected. Safe winner is beside the operator of the play automat anyhow the state, which - if it concerns legally set up devices - a not inconsiderable part of the profit as pleasure and value added tax in the context of the laws for gambling receives. Play automats are divided into

• Money profit playing equipments (GGSG) and
• Maintenance automat without money profit possibility how
  • Flipperautomaten,
  • Arcade automat
• A combination of vending machine and gambling are toy automats.

Legal regulation in Germany

To the consumer protection and for containment to the play craze money play automats in restaurants or play halls are subject to exact laws. Therefore only certain types of play automats are certified in Germany. The details of the enterprise of play automats are exactly fixed in Germany in since 1 January 2006 the valid gambling ordinance.

So for example an individual play at a money playing equipment must take at least five seconds; after the valid regulation were this 12 seconds. The pool 0.20 euro may not exceed and the profit at the most 2 euro amount to. The disbursement ratio amounts to with devices of newer design approximately 80% (so far: 60%) of the employments decreased by the legal value added tax. The employment is limited since 1 January 2006 on 20 euro-cent, the maximum gain amounts to two euro for the singles match. By so-called series or bonus plays however actually clearly higher profits are possible.

Maintenance automats with profit possibility were against it the so-called token devices, with which the point gain in token (profit marks) was paid off or in cash. After the new play regulation a disbursement is however no longer permissible, therefore also the days of this automat category are counted.
