The Weihnachtslotterie (Sorteo de Navidad) is a form of the national Lotterie out-played in Spain since 1812. The designation Sorteo de Navidad emerged for the first time in the year 1892. The Spanish Weinachtslotterie applies, measured at the out-played sum total, as the largest Lotterie of the world. Like that profits of altogether 2.023 billion are intended for the 2005 to out-pass on Weihnachtslotterie, what corresponds to 70% of the employments (the payment in the German Lotto compares: 50%). On the main price, El Gordo (German: ) A total profit of 510 million euro will escape the thickness.
The Weihnachtslotterie is based, like also the regular drawings of the Spanish state lottery, on lots with numbers with 5 digits. Due to the large popularity of the Lotterie these numbers are however sold several times in each case: Several so-called "series" of the lots are presented. A whole lot (Billete) is besides quite expensively, so that the most usual sales form is the tenth lot . Privately or over associations often still smaller participation in tenth lots is passed on, partly with a small Preisaufschlag, which goes as donation to the association.
The exact number of ticket numbers and series as well as their price and the exact allocation of profit are again determined each year. For example there were 2004 exactly 66000 different ticket numbers in 195 series. 2005 is it 85000 numbers in 170 Serien.Ein whole lot costs equivalent lasting 200 euro, a tenth 20 euro.
After a report in Frankfurter Rundschau approximately 98% all Spaniard are each year at least a lot portion to acquire (and/or given get). The lots are each year already starting from approximately at the beginning of of August available.
On 18 December 1812 the drawing of the Lotterie was made for the first time after one until today recurring samples. In two large drums are wood balls. The one drum contains some ten thousand of it -- per one per ticket number, the other identical balls for the profit stages. After drawing each two pupils or pupils of the Madrider school San Ildefonso sing the ticket number and the appropriate profit to one ball. Due to the number of profits which can be drawn this procedure takes about three hours. Are pulled among other things over 1500 individual ticket numbers for prices by ever 1000 euro.
The high point of the daily is the drawing of the Gordo (2005: 3 million euro for each of the 170 Billetes with the pulled number). Since the sales offices sell usually a great many tenth lots the same number, frequently whole villages or firm staffs per head book a six-digit profit. Sometimes according to television reports this leads to a drastic rise of the local real estate prices.
In not spanischsprachigen countries sometimes the term El Gordo is regarded specific as the Weihnachslotterie; even El Gordo is partly accepted is the name of the Weihnachtslotterie altogether. In reality El Gordo however also completely generally means "the main price". Also different Lotterien have thus their Gordo. In addition a weekly Lotto play with the name El Gordo de la Primitiva takes place for some time in Spain. This is not to confound with the Weihnachtslotterie.
